FAQ

  • What are the benefits of learning a new language at an early age?
Learning a new language in the early years of life offers numerous cognitive, academic, and social benefits. Research indicates that bilingual children often show enhanced problem-solving skills, better multitasking abilities, and greater cognitive flexibility. These skills stem from the brain's adaptation to managing two languages, which enhances its ability to process information from multiple sources effectively. Moreover, early language learning has been associated with improved memory and attention span. Children who learn a second language from a young age are also likely to exhibit increased empathy and cultural awareness because they are exposed to and must navigate different linguistic and cultural contexts. Academically, bilingual children often have improved reading abilities and perform better on standardized tests in math and reading compared to monolingual peers. The process of learning a second language also reinforces the structure and vocabulary of a child’s first language, leading to improved literacy skills overall.
  • Can my child, who doesn’t speak French and comes from a non-French-speaking household, still learn the language effectively in your school?
Absolutely! Children who do not speak French initially or come from non-French-speaking households can still thrive in our French immersion program. Unlike adults, young children do not typically experience the same social anxieties about making mistakes when learning a new language. This openness allows them to absorb new sounds, vocabulary, and structures more easily and without apprehension. A typical day includes various activities that integrate French naturally: - Circle Time: This involves group discussions, French songs, and story readings, where children get accustomed to the sounds and rhythms of the language. - Activities and meal time: During these activities, children are exposed to repetitive French vocabulary associated with everyday actions and objects. For instance, phrases like "peindre" (paint), "coller" (glue), "Tu veux plus de pommes?" (Do you want more apples?), and "Va chercher ta bouteille d'eau" (Get your water bottle) become familiar through frequent use. - Using Gestures: Our teachers enhance understanding by pairing new French words with gestures. This helps children make connections between unfamiliar words and their meanings, facilitating easier comprehension and language acquisition.
  • How do you communicate with parents about their child’s progress?
We believe in open and continuous communication with parents. Our teachers provide regular updates through digital platforms (Brightwheel), scheduled parent-teacher meetings, and informal daily exchanges at pick-up and drop-off times.
  • Will my child learn to read and write in kindergarten or earlier?
At Au Clair de Lune, we tailor our educational approach to follow the rhythm and readiness of each child. While your child will definitely learn to read and write by kindergarten, our small teacher-to-student ratio and personalized teaching methods often enable children to begin developing these essential skills at the preschool level. Our educators are skilled at recognizing when a child is ready to start reading and writing, and they provide the tools and support needed to foster these abilities early on. This approach ensures that learning progresses naturally and effectively, setting a strong foundation for future academic success.
  • What is a French immersion program?
Our French immersion program means that all activities, instruction, and communication are conducted in French. This immersive environment helps children become fluent in French naturally and effortlessly as part of their daily interactions and learning.
  • What age groups do you accept at Au Clair de Lune?
We welcome children from 3 months to kindergarten.
  • What qualifications do your teachers have?
All our teachers are qualified in early childhood education and are fluent in French. They have undergone rigorous background checks, specific training in child care, educational pedagogy, and first aid to ensure the best educational outcomes and safety for your child.
  • What kind of activities are included in the STEM curriculum for young children?
Our STEM curriculum includes age-appropriate activities focusing on basic science experiments, introduction to technology and tools, engineering challenges like building and constructing, and foundational math skills like counting, shapes, and simple problem-solving.
  • Is your school a full-time program?
We offer full-time programs for all age groups from 8:30am to 3:30pm, Monday to Friday. For infants and 2 year olds only, we also offer 2 days per week (T+Th) and 3 days per week (M+W+F) from 8:30 am to 3:30pm. Extended care is offered from 8:00-8:30am and again from 3:30pm-5:00pm.
  • How can I enroll my child in Au Clair de Lune?
To enroll, we recommend booking a tour of our facility to meet our team and see our learning environment firsthand. After the tour, if you decide to proceed, you will be provided with a link to apply and fill out the enrollment packet.
  • What is the student-to-teacher ratio in your classes?
Our student-to-teacher ratios are kept low to ensure personalized attention and quality learning experiences. For infants, the ratio is 1:4 and for preschoolers and kindergarteners, it's 1:8.
  • Are there outdoor activities or physical education included in the curriculum?
Yes, physical education is an integral part of our curriculum. We have daily outdoor activities tailored to each age group to promote physical health, motor skill development, and social skills through play.
  • What are the arrangements for lunch and snacks at the school?
Snacks are provided to all students twice daily, once in the morning and once in the afternoon. The cost for these snacks is included in the material fee paid at the beginning of each school year. For lunch, students have the option to purchase meals, which are served warm and fresh every day. Our exclusive chefs prepare these lunches on-site, using only the finest ingredients to ensure each meal is balanced and nutritious.
  • Does the school have a uniform policy?
Yes, our school has a mandatory uniform policy. Students are required to wear either a grey or white polo shirt, paired with black pants, shorts, or skirts, and grey sweaters. Uniforms play a crucial role, especially for toddlers, as they help in reducing morning stress by eliminating the need to choose outfits daily. Additionally, uniforms create a sense of community and belonging among students, while also ensuring that all children are dressed appropriately and comfortably for a variety of school activities.
